Letters : New Fine Gael Bill to force Men out of directorship roles

A new Fine Gael Bill entitled the "corporate governance bill 2021" will force Companies to select directors based on their gender rather than the person's skills , abilities , merits and qualifications .

Under the new Bill , 40% of people recruited for Directorships must be selected on the basis that they are female even if others so happen to be more qualified for the role .

Announcing her Bill on social media , Fine Gael TD Emer Hiiggins (Dublin Mid West) says :

Take a second to imagine a boardroom today in Ireland . Chances are you've thought of a lot of Men sitting around a table ... only 22% of directors are female . I want to change that .  I am launching a bill that will require 40% of board members be women , the same bill will compel companies to report out on gender balance in the boardroom.

Ms Higgins complains that just 22% of Directors are women . Perhaps the reason for this is the fact that more men are involved in setting up businesses . There are no barriers in Ireland preventing women from becoming directors or in fact doing anything they want . Do women really need Ms Hiiggins to create special pathways to positions of authority by introducing laws to exclude men . Is this what women really want .

Ms Higgins describes her bill as .. "good for women , good for equality , but most importantly its better for business" .

Ms Hiiggins stopped short of explaining how its "better for business" . I mean , If a business is recruiting people based on criteria other than the person's skills and abilities , qualifications etc , how does that improve the performance of the business . Is she suggesting that the mere fact of having certain body parts makes you superior at doing a job . Surely , whether someone is male or female should be irrelevant , the only criteria that should matter are the persons skills and abilities .

Below : Emer Higgins TD discussing her new Bill .

thousands of men will lose their jobs as company directors over this proposed law . its discrimination .

^
I see the Emer Higgins bill didn't go down too well on social media. Gender quotas are demeaning . it says you cant achieve anything off your own bat ,must be treated like a child and given special privileges because of your gender

^
are we living in a communist state . A private enterprise should have the freedom to pick its own board of directors without interference from the state . A lot of Men will lose their jobs if this becomes law , a lot of companies are going to lose out on a lot of talented people simply because they happen to Male through no fault of their own
^
stop picking on Men . Its so difficult nowadays to be a Man , this type of thing doesn't help one bit . just leave men alone .
^
emer higgins must have a chip on her shoulder against Men . Whats her problem . I couldn't care less if someone was a man or woman director , so long as their good at the job and are the best qualified thats all that should matter .
